| The
fountain grass or purple fountain grass is a fast growing, clump
grass. It has purple foliage and purple foxtail-like flowers.
This plant is only an annual in northern climates. In climatic
zones 9, 10, and 11, it is a perennial. Fountain grass grown
in northern climates is grown as a decorative annual or in a
container. |
Fountain
grass is grown successfully in fertile well-drained soil with
full sun after all danger of frost has passed. Purple fountain
grass is a vigorous grower that will quickly fill in any bed
or container. The foxtail-like plumes will appear in mid summer
and last until first frost.
The fountain grass plant grows into an arching clump with
burgundy-bronze green leaves that are about 12" long.
After the first hard freeze the plant will slowly bleach out
to the color of straw, but still looks quite attractive throughout
the winter. Purple fountain grass plumes are good for dried
arrangements.

| The
opportunities to use Purple Fountain Grass in the landscape
are numerous. Fountain grass is frequently used in groups or
as a specimen in foundations, public gardens, and roadway medians,
where it is quite stunning and requires little care. Its ability
to withstand high temperatures, high humidity, drought, wind,
and acidic or alkaline soils only make it more desirable. These
grasses are easily the dominant ornamental grass in southern
landscapes. In addition to its beauty and durability it is virtually
pest free. |
