Ornamental Grass Care
Ornamental grass care should begin with fertility. Apply a slow release fertilizer in the spring as plant growth resumes to enable the grass to exhibit its upright qualities. Keeping a low level of fertility will keep lodging to a minimum. Water the fertilizer in thoroughly.

The next step for ornamental grass care is water application. Established plants do not need regular watering, but they may need supplemental water during a period of drought. Ornamental grasses are quite hardy and do not need a great deal of additional moisture.

The next step in ornamental grass care is controlling weeds. Newly established plants need cultivation around the plants to control weeds. Applying mulch will greatly reduce the need for cultivation. Ornamental grass care can be minimized by the application of mulch. The mulch also helps retain moisture around the grass.

For the winter, ornamental grass care is minimal. Leave the grass standing for winter interest. Early in the spring, before grasses begin to grow, cut the plants back to 4-6 inches in height. Remove the cut foliage. The foliage removal will allow for earlier growth by promoting warmer soil temperatures. Ornamental grass is very low maintenance perennial plant.
